Leif-Billyz: Jämtgubben, polka av Rune "Gnesta-Kalle" Gnestadius

I am so glad that silverbassharpa changed his YouTube settings to allow embedding because it allows me to share this wonderful video with you!

The tune they are playing is "Jämtgubben (Guy from Jämtland) av Rune "Gnesta-Kalle" Gnestadius", which seems like it could be danced as either a polka or snoa. It's interesting that they use [...]

A "banjo hopsa" from Denmark

While originally an African-American folk instrument, the banjo has made its way into use in the traditional (and not-so-traditional) music of Nordic countries as well.

Here is "Hopsa efter Niels "Svenske Niels" Wilhelm". It's also known as the "Banjohopsa (Banjo Hopsa)" because Erling played it on banjo with Svenske Niels (Swedish Niels/Nils) in the 1970s.The hopsa [...]

Håkon Høgemo & Trent Bruner: Utan udla, hamborgar

Here's a treat – a video of a hamborgar! No, not a hamburger…a hambOrgAr! A hamborgar is a type of Norwegian polka.
The video is of Håkon Høgemø and Trent Bruner playing a tune called "Utan udla" (sometimes spelled "Utan utla"), a tune from the Hordaland region of Norway.
Høgemø plays the fiddle traditions of Sogn, [...]

Thoughts on the new structure of Lagspel finals

Last night, the finals were held for Lagspel at NM i Folkemusikk.
In previous years at Landskappleik, the Lagspel was done like all the other categories with the groups playing two slåtter (fiddle tunes) and then the final results were posted after they were available.
This year, in part because of the blending of Landsfestival and Landskappleik, [...]

Where were the rest of the accordions?

We've now spent most of the day listing to the solo durspel/trekkspill junior and senior competion/qualifying rounds here at Norway's national folk music/dance competition. The category is for  solo players of diatonic accordions (mostly one and two rows) and chromatic accordions.
Each competitor must play two tunes, each of a different type. Most choose to play [...]

Album Review: Rannveig Djønne – Spelferd Heim

In 2007, I attended Landskappleiken, one of Norway's two major national folk music competitions, for the fifth time. One of the events was the durspel (diatonic accordion) competition.
The second to the last competitor that year was a young woman from the west coast of Norway and her playing brought tears to my eyes. This [...]

A polka party in the chicken yard

This video is absolutely delightful.
A YouTube user who calls himself "Jan Anders" plays a tune he calls "Kyckling polka (Chicken Polka)" on an Elis Brandt G/C two-row diatonic accordion. And he plays it in the middle of a chicken yard where some fowl friends can be seen moving in and out of camera range.
Another YouTube [...]

The mystery of "Red Wing" in Norway…solved!

A few years ago some Norwegian musicians visited our local Nordic Jam and heard someone start to play a tune called "Red Wing" — a well-known old-time two-step in the USA (documented in the Digital Library of Appalachia).
The Norwegian musicians mentioned that they had heard the tune played in Norway. This lead to the unfortunate [...]

Rimpparemmi: Finnish folk dance

Rimpparemmi is a Finnish / Så¡mi folk dance and music ensemble from Lapland province that has a unique claim — "The Official Folk Ensemble of Santa Claus". In addition, they claim the title of the northernmost folk dance theatre in the world.
I'm not going to dwell on the competing claims to Santa Claus of the [...]

HamBAO and Bach…

The traditional Allsång på Skansen (Allsang at Skansen) in Sweden usually has some unforgettable moments.
One of my personal favorites was the time that Swedish comedian Robert Gustafsson interupted a BAO (Benny Anderssons Orkester) performance as  "Sten Broman", a well-known Swedish music critic.
At first, the announcer introduces BAO to play a hambo (a hamBAO?) and claims [...]

Jenka or polkka? You decide…

You can run into some interesting things on YouTube…
There's a YouTube user from Russia, orvokki7, who has posted a number of videos of performances by the Karelian/Russian dance company, Ensemble Kantele
Of course, the descriptions for the videos are written in Russian with Cyrillic characters, so I'm at a loss.
But the interesting thing is that video [...]
