Leif-Billyz: Jämtgubben, polka av Rune "Gnesta-Kalle" Gnestadius

I am so glad that silverbassharpa changed his YouTube settings to allow embedding because it allows me to share this wonderful video with you!

The tune they are playing is "Jämtgubben (Guy from Jämtland) av Rune "Gnesta-Kalle" Gnestadius", which seems like it could be danced as either a polka or snoa. It's interesting that they use [...]

Ila Auto: Norsk blågress / Norwegian bluegrass

Last Friday, I went to a fabulous concert by Monroe Crossing (with a great opening set by a young and impressive group, the Sawtooth Bluegrass Band). Monroe Crossing is a nationally recognized bluegrass band from here in Minnesota and they usually do one or two shows each year here in Northfield.  Most recently, they had [...]

A Finnish waltz for bass and diatonic accordion

This week, one of the artists featured on the Multe Music show will be the Finnish duo, Lepistö&Lehti.
The duo got their start in the Finnish folk ensemble, Värttinä. (Of course, as I like to joke — what Finnish folk artist didn't?!). Even their web site says:
The duo came from different parts of Finland, joined forces [...]

An electric Leksands skanklåt

Over the last few years, I've made a real effort to get to know more about the folk rock and progressive rock scene in the Nordic countries, particularly in the 1970s. There was some great music coming out at that time.
Kebnekajse was one of the best known Swedish bands of that period. Some classify [...]

Setesdal Roots Band: Sommer i Setesdal

It's summer and one of my friends just got back from exploring his roots in Setesdal, so it seems appropriate to feature a video from the Setesdal Roots Band.
The  group is from Setesdal province in Norway. They play mostly their own compositions that are rooted in traditions such as pop, bluegrass, country, rock, blues [...]

Bermuda is in Iceland

I recently found a band from Iceland — and I'm really enjoying their sound.
The band is Bermuda and they describe themselves on their MySpace page as "pop, R&B, funk". I've also seen the term " power pop" used.

Bermuda is:

Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir / Iris Holm – vocals
Gunnar Reynir Þorsteinsson – drums
Ingvar Alfreðsson – [...]

A new Spindel on a tune…

Spindel is a band fronted by two wonderful female Hardanger fiddle players from Nordfjord: Liv Merete Kroken and Sigrid Moldestad. Here they are with a tune called — in Swedish — "Du och jag Alfred (You and I, Alfred)".
This non-professional video was recorded at Halkaer Festival in Denmark in June 2009 . [...]

The most requested Nordic tune in Minnesota…

… nursing homes (alderheimer)?
Johan på snippen. Really.
A few years ago, a friend of mine went to a concert given by three prominent accordionists from this region. They were playing both full-size and diatonic accordions and lots of music from all over Europe.
During the program, they mentioned that the Swedish tune "Johan på snippen  (John in [...]

Midsummer in Ål

It was a midsummer to remember in Ål as the 2009 NM i Folkemusikk (Norwegian National Championships in Folk Music) began with the first competition and a public dance at the local Folkepark.
Well-known Norwegian recording artist Odd Nordstoga opened the evening with a very clever and well-done speech about the historic nature of this [...]

It's Sankthans / Juhannes / Midsummer!

The cultures that seem to appreciate light the most are the ones that go without it for large parts of the year. That is why the summer season is so important for the inhabitants of the Nordic nations.
Today, June 23 is Sankthans in Norway — also known as Midsummer / Midsommer / Midtsummer / Juhannes. [...]

Hootenanny Singers: Gabrielle

In 1964, a group called the Hootenanny Singers had a big hit with the song "Gabrielle". They recorded the song in a number of languages (Swedish, German, Dutch and English).
Here's a charming foray into early 1960s Swedish music. This is the English language version.
And that cherub faced guitarist next to the bass? That's Björn Ulvaeus. [...]

Album Review: Krauka – Óðinn

The new Krauka album, Óðinn, recently came across my desk for review. According to the band's web site, it's the group's fourth release.
The copy I received was simply the CD in a sleeve with minimal information. I would have really liked to have had lyrics and liner notes included (whether in Icelandic, Danish or English) [...]
