Celebrating a Scandinavian composer's birthday

by Ruth Marie on Wednesday, 16 December 2009 · 0 comments

Today is the birthday of one of Scandinavia's most celebrated and well-known composers. His works have been heard in almost every country in the world. Do you know who it is?

I don't want to spoil the surprise, so enjoy this two-and-a-half minute clip of a selection of the composer's works played on piano and join me below to find out who we are celebrating!

Did you guess?

It's Benny Andersson of ABBA fame — but he has composed so much more, including exquisite traditional folk music.

That's Benny himself playing a selection of his compostions from his first thirty years as a songwriter. The film was made in 1996 to celebrate his 50th birthday. And the tunes?

  • Sunny Girl
  • Wedding
  • Ljuva Sextital
  • Money Money Money
  • Chess
  • Födelsedagsvals Till Mona
  • Hemma
  • Thank You For The Music

Yesterday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that ABBA will be one of the 2010 inductees. Must have been a nice birthday present for Mr. Andersson.

Grattis på födelsedagen, Benny!
