From 16th century tune to a polska

The group of Swedish folk artists who brought us the lovely album, Jul i Folkton (Christmas in Folk Sounds), are at it again. They have created a new live show, which is currently touring Sweden and will result in a live album to be released soon.

This video is of a performance of one piece from the "Jul i Folkton" show — a combination of two tunes. The first is "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" (often translated as "Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming"), which Michael Praetorius adapted and set in Book VI of his Musae Sioniae, from 1609. The second is a familiar Swedish polska.

The video clip is from Swedish TV4 on December 9, 2009. Playing are Ale Möller (10-string mandola and flute), Lisa Rydberg (fiddle), Esbjörn Hazelius (fiddle) Roger Tallroth (10-string mandola) and Olle Linder (double bass). Sofia Karlsson and Lena Willemark are also in the show, but were not present for this taping.

A 90 minute Swedish radio broadcast from a "Jul i Folkton" concert on December 6 may be heard until the middle of January at http://www.sr.se/sida/sandningsarkiv.aspx?programid=2406
