Skandia Folkdance Society has announed that this year's Springdans Northwest dance and music workshops (April 16-19, 2010) will feature the Finnskogpols (Polsdans from Finnskoga) taught by Bjørn Sverre Hol Haugen and Veslemøy Nordset from Norway. Originating in the border area between Sweden and Norway, this dance is embraced by Swedes and Norwegians alike — as well as by a rapidly expanding number of Americans.
Students in the U.S. have praised Hol Haugen and Nordset for their clear teaching and extensive knowledge of dance traditions. He is a well-known dance and costume ethnographer; she is a costume designer. This year, the couple won top honors in their class at Norway's 2009 national folk music and dance competition. There's a great video of them dancing at the closing concert here.
Musicians are in for a treat as Swedish fiddler Eva Karlsson shares her knowledge of Finnskoga's musical traditions. Joining her will be U.S. fiddler, Bruce Sagan, who will teach fiddle and nyckelharpa classes.
The application deadline is January 15, 2010, but please apply early to avoid a waiting list. (By mid-January this year, Scandia Folkdance Society already had a double-digit waiting list for last April's camp!)
Springdans Northwest takes place at the charming and comfortable Seabeck Conference Center on Washington State's scenic Hood Canal.
