Pizza-kast

by Ruth Marie on Friday, 4 September 2009 · 0 comments

And in our final entry for this week's "halling-fest"…

Apparently some Norwegians prefer their pizza without peppers. The Norwegian pizza brand, Grandiosa, has made a commercial in the style of a American Idol-like competion about their new pizza "without peppers (paprika)". What they call "paprika" is what we in the USA would call "sweet red peppers".

What does this have to do with Nordic traditions?

At around :40, you'll see Hallgrim Hansegård of the FRIKAR dance company and one of Norway's top laus dancers, do a hallingkast (the jump in the Norwegian men's show-off dance, halling) in full Valdres bunad — and kick the pizza off the stick for an opportunity to go to the "finals" in "paprika stripping". He makes it.

Hansegård was the choreographer of and one of the main dancers for Alexander Rybak's winning Eurovision Song Contest entry, Fairytale, which put the traditional halling dance in a new setting.

Also featured is Norwegian ballet dancer,  Helene Olav.
