Håkon Høgemo & Trent Bruner: Utan udla, hamborgar

Here's a treat – a video of a hamborgar! No, not a hamburger…a hambOrgAr! A hamborgar is a type of Norwegian polka.
The video is of Håkon Høgemø and Trent Bruner playing a tune called "Utan udla" (sometimes spelled "Utan utla"), a tune from the Hordaland region of Norway.
Høgemø plays the fiddle traditions of Sogn, Voss and Hardanger. He has won Norway's national competition, Landskappleiken, in hardingfele ( Hardanger Fiddle) four times — twice in Klasse B (Open/Adult Class), which moved him up to Klasse A (Master Class) where he has won in 1989 and 1995.
I was in the audience in 1995 when Høgemø won Landskappleiken at Førde in Sogn og Fjordane. If I remember correctly, he played a beautiful listening tune and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He is a gifted player.
In 2000, he was one of the Master Teachers at the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America (HFAA) workshops where he and Vidar Lande taught fiddle and Leikny Aasen and Vidar Underseth (himself a Class A fiddler) taught dance.
Bruner is a Canadian from Canwood, Saskatchewan who now lives and works on Osterøy, an island off the west coast of Norway. He is active in both traditional Canadian and Norwegian music. I had the opportunity of meeting him in Norway and interviewed him about his involvement in traditional music. I hope to have that interview on the show at some point.
The video was filmed in November 2008. Høgemø and Bruner were guests of the Hamre/Hjellvik Brass Band's on the island of Osterøy, Norway. It's a lively tune — as a polka should be!
