Well, the Swedish swing/hip-hop/jazz group, MOVITS!, has certainly experienced the Colbert Bump this week.
After appearing last Monday on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, the group received plenty of attention. And it was pretty obvious here at Multe Music. We've received hundreds of hits on our postings about the tune "Fel del av gården (Wrong Side Of The Tracks)" and the band's appearance on the Colbert Report.
MOVITS! music is now available in the USA on iTunes and the appearance on The Colbert Report took the group's album, Äppelknyckarjazz (Apple-stealing-jazz), from #93,400 on the iTunes store BC (Before Colbert) to #75 AD (After Debut).
So today we'll introduce another song off that album, "Swing För Hyresgästföreningen (Swing Dance for the Union of Tenants)". Hyresgästföreningen is the Swedish organization that helps protect the rights of those renting (not owning) their living quarters. Swing with a message of social responsibility? As Colbert says, "It falls to Sweden…"
On the "What's New?' edition of Multe Music, we'll be playing a MOVITS! track called "Stick iväg Jack del II (Hit The Road, Jack Part II)" which clearly shows an influence from and homage to Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", that had the famous refrain "Hit the road, Jack, and doncha come back no more, no more, no more, no more". The tune is a little more laid back than the ones seen in the various MOVITS! videos currently on YouTube.
A YouTube user provided the following English language translation:
A little swing for the Hyresgästföreningen (tenants union),
Excuse us for the late payment,
I guess we owe some money,
and the landlord's strict now,
can't even bother waiting a week,
and the roof's beginning to leak,
trying to write some checks,
got to cover something,
thousand bucks should be enough,
but now he's all about interest rates,I work fifty hours a week, but,
overtime doesn't seem to cut it,
Mom, Dad – mind sending me some money? It's beginning to get a little tight, I must say,
I've got the notice about eviction,
but with your help, I'll get it abrogated,
I've been living with hand-me-downs since I learned to read,
because the housing market's closed,
from the salaries from the factories,
So I started with robbing bankers -
"So give me the money" – but they call the cops,
been running since, so tell me why;
should it be so hard to get a rented apartment,
or get a mortgage,
Enjoy some MOVITS!
