A new Spindel on a tune…

by Ruth Marie on Monday, 13 July 2009 · 0 comments

Spindel is a band fronted by two wonderful female Hardanger fiddle players from Nordfjord: Liv Merete Kroken and Sigrid Moldestad. Here they are with a tune called — in Swedish — "Du och jag Alfred (You and I, Alfred)".

This non-professional video was recorded at Halkaer Festival in Denmark in June 2009 . Listen at the end as the enthusiastic audience claps along in rhythm. The guy playing the mandola is Olav Tveitane, who plays in a number of groups and was a judge for the Lagspel and Gruppespel categories at Norway's national folk music/dance competition, NM i Folkemusikk, later that same month.

I've paid attention to Spindel — and enjoyed their music — ever since their first album, which I bought because I was so impressed with Moldestad's playing at the 1995 Norwegian national competition in Forde, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

Spindel is:

  • Liv Merete Kroken: Hardanger fiddle, fiddle
  • Sigrid Moldestad: Hardanger fiddle, fiddle and song
  • Olav Tveitane: Cister, guitar, double-bass and song
  • Dagfinn Andersen: Piano and harmonium, song
  • Ivar Kolve: Percussion and marimba
