HamBAO and Bach…

The traditional Allsång på Skansen (Allsang at Skansen) in Sweden usually has some unforgettable moments.

One of my personal favorites was the time that Swedish comedian Robert Gustafsson interupted a BAO (Benny Anderssons Orkester) performance as  "Sten Broman", a well-known Swedish music critic.

At first, the announcer introduces BAO to play a hambo (a hamBAO?) and claims he doesn't know what a "hambo-stinta" is. It's a "hambo girl".

They start to play and "Broman" appears.

"Broman" criticizes Andersson's fame, accordion and "inane music" with clever jokes that crack up both the band and audience.

At one point, he claims that 'it doesn't ring any bells for Andersson…'. The Swedish is, literally, "'det klingar inga klockor för Andersson" which is a play on words about "Klinga mina klockor", an orchestral piece (also played in folk traditionas a polska) that Andersson wrote. Finally, he goads them into playing Bach — banjo included.

The audience loves it. You may, too.

Unfortunately, embedding this video has been disabled, so I can't show it on this page. But I really encourage you to take a look at it on the YouTube site that hosts it. It really is a gem! (And you could do a fast polka to the Bach…)
