Victor Borge: Danish folk songs

by Ruth Marie on Friday, 6 February 2009 · 0 comments

For many years, one of my favorite comedy performers was the Danish pianist-comedian, Victor Borge.

Borge was a consumate musician with a great wit. His use of the English language for humor was extraordinary.

He was perhaps better known by older generations. The only time I was able to experience him "live" was when a friend took meto one of his concerts in San Diego as a birthday in the early 1990s.  I looked around at all the gray hair surrounding me and said to my friend, "Thank you for choosing taking me to a concert that would make me feel so young!" The audience members around me roared with laughter.

He deserves to get attention from younger generations.

Here Borge tells some humorous stories about the Danish queen and then plays a medley of traditional Danish folk songs arranged for piano. In the comments on the YouTube page, some of the songs were identified as:

  • "Hist hvor vejen slår en bugt"
  • "På nørregade der bor en bager…"
  • "Var en lørdag aften"
  • "Jeg er havren"
  • "Den lille ole"
  • "Marken er mejet", a harvest song from the Randers region also know with alternate words as "Oppe i Norge"

Apparently, this footage was shot at a Minneapolis, Minnesota concert in 1992.
