Sven Nyhus Kvartett: Med hopp og hiv

Cover: Med hopp og hiv

Yesterday, I received a surprise gift from a friend in Norway. He sent the 1973 album, "Med hopp og hiv" (With hopp and heave), by the Sven Nyhus Kvartett.

it's a recording that is not easily available anymore — and what a treasure it is!

Nyhus is a legendary fiddler in Norway, still making music and recordings. I believe that this was the first recording by the Kvartett (quartet). Nevertheless, you can hear several of the recognizable elements that make this group one of my favorites, especially for dancing.

Nyhus has remarkable technical abilities on the fiddle and he also knows how to interpret the music through delicate phrasing that make dancers want to get out and move on the floor. His ornamentation helps to drive the tune along.

His rhythm guitar player, Arne Sigurd Haugen, clearly shows the clean, simple and brisk style of playing that has made him a Nyhus "regular" through the years and adds so much to the uplift in the tunes of the groups in which he plays. These days, that includes Hallingdal Kraftlag and Honndalstausene.

At times, I thought the bass was not as crisp as it could have been and the accordion played well with Nyshus, although sometimes it seemed to overpower the fiddle in the recording.

Among my favorite tracks on the album:

  • Fandens polsdans etter Jostein Nytrøen (The Devil's Polsdance after Jostein Nytrøen)
  • Vals etter Jens Smed [Smed Jens vals] (Waltz after Jens the Blacksmith)
  • Finnleken, pols (The Finn Tune)

An interesting side story. The year after this album was made, Arne Sigurd Haugen came to the USA as a foreign exchange student for a year at St. Olaf College here in Northfield. Years later, the story comes full circle – but that'smore stories for other times . . .

Sven Nyhus' music is available through iTunes and Amazon CDs.
