Frigg-in' awesome powerfolk music

I've been a fan of the pan-Nordic group, Frigg, since their first album. Who am I kidding? I'd probably be a fan of almost anything the Järvelä or Larsen siblings do!

And I really like the way they describe themselves on their MySpace page:

We're a Finnish-Norwegian group who produces fresh Scandinavian powerfolk with violins, fretted instruments, upright bass and endless energy!

It's true! Here's an example of their playing at Kalottspel 2007, an annual August folk music and dance festival held in Målselv in the northern province of Troms, Norway.

Their playing what I believe are two original tunes, "Polka International de Louisiane" and "Fantomen" found on their live album, Frigg Live. They've definitely got a Finnish/Norwegian/Cajun vibe going.

Here's hoping their energy lifts you up today! Frigg's music is available on iTunes.

Frigg is:

  • Antti Järvelä – double bass
  • Einar Olav Larsen – fiddle
  • Esko Järvelä – viola, fiddle
  • Petri Prauda – cittern, mandolin, bagpipes, jews harp
  • Gjermund Larsen – fiddle
  • Alina Järvelä – fiddle
  • Tuomas Logrén – guitar, dobro

Additional members every now and then:

  • Tommi Asplund – fiddle
  • Sara Puljula – percussion
  • Laura-Beth Salter – mandolin
  • Tero Hyväluoma – fiddle
  • Roope Aarnio – mandolin, mandola
  • Topi Korhonen – guitar
